Crowley Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and Cultural & Creative Arts, Inc., Project Director Dollie Eaglin-Monroe, in partnership with Ashé Cultural Arts Center, present Thirteen Lessons, an original performance work that explores the theme of adult literacy in our community. The work was commissioned by the Lindy Boggs National Center for Community Literacy & The New Orleans Literacy Alliance. It was written by Lenwood O. Sloan. This production is directed by John Grimsley and produced by Ashé Cultural Arts Center in New Orleans.

The 13 Lessons is a story theater work taken from oral histories and first person testimonies from those caught in the circumstance of illiteracy, those committed to working to help them obtain improved literacy skills, champions and advocates for literacy in our community, policy makers and business community representatives. This performance work offers an empowering view of people who do not know how to read. The 13 Lessons introduces and explores the issues, tensions and ironies of people who are part of the continuing adult literacy drama in our communities.

The work uses a blend of original music and popular classics, combined with a script that shows dramatically, and at times humorously, the challenges and barriers that so effectively trap 40% of our adult population. The 13 Lessons provides information, challenges, stereotypes, and raises compassion and understanding. It effectively calls audiences to accept the mantra that “something must be done.”

The diverse group of actors includes: Luis Q. Barroso, Talecia Julie Blunt, Andrea El-Mansura, Tony Fennelly, Barry Lamont Franklin, Kevin M. Hubble, Kesha McKey, Karel Sloane-Boekbinder, Bobby Toomer, Travis Tran, Canae M. White, Will Williams, and Greta Zehner.

Tickets are available at: Acadia Parish School Board, Title I Parental Involvement Office, (337) 783-3664, ext. 253; Cynthia Dominick, (337) 783-8939; Dollie Eaglin-Monroe, (504) 239-0126; Crowley High School, Charlesetta Andrus, (337) 783-5313; and The Crowley Art Gallery, Susie, 222 N.
